Mount Pleasant ISD

WordPress multisite modernization for a Texas school district. Project in development.

The Challenge

Mount Pleasant Independent School District has run its district website and school sites on WordPress for about six years. Over that time the platform collected technical debt: a legacy page builder, aging themes and plugins, and the risk that a routine update could break the site. Security and accessibility requirements were getting harder to manage, and the migration of years of content looked like more than a theme swap.

The district wanted to stay on WordPress and keep the familiar experience its staff, families and school communities rely on, while replacing the fragile foundation underneath. VND works with schools, colleges and learning organizations across the education sector.

The VND Approach

VND treated the engagement as a platform modernization, not a cosmetic redesign. The work started with technical discovery: a review of the multisite structure that serves the district and its school sites, a crawl of the content footprint, the hosting and security setup, plugin and theme dependencies, the editing workflow, and the migration risks created by builder-specific content.

The plan that came out of that review includes:

  • A lighter, maintainable WordPress architecture built on native blocks and reusable components, so staff can assemble pages without deeply nested builder layouts.
  • A shared component system across the district and school sites.
  • Content migration that preserves existing pages, media, menus and, where practical, URLs and SEO value.
  • Accessibility remediation, security hardening and performance work as core requirements, with the current hosting and caching setup reviewed for cost and performance, including managed WordPress hosting options.
  • Analytics and search visibility, with Google Analytics and Search Console configured or recommended.
  • A development, staging and production workflow with backups, testing and rollback planning.
  • Documentation and training so the content team can work confidently in the new environment.

Beyond the Backend

As planning progressed, the district asked for modest improvements to navigation, presentation and visual polish, the kind of work VND handles in its web design practice. Rather than turn the modernization into an open-ended redesign, VND set up a separate, controlled support allocation. Recommendations are reviewed with the district, previewed in design where useful, prioritized, and implemented within the agreed budget.

Long-Term Sustainability

The district also chose ongoing quarterly WordPress maintenance: scheduled core and plugin updates, backups before every update, compatibility checks, monitoring, security review and platform guidance. The goal is to protect the modernization investment so the site does not drift back into the state that started the project.

Project Status

This project is in development. Launch results, performance and accessibility testing outcomes, and feedback from the district’s content team will be added after launch.
